Ultra-rare Captain Jack White stamps for sale at MacDonnell Whyte’s Dublin Auction
MacDonnell Whyte’s forthcoming sale at the Hilton Hotel, Claremont Place, D.2. on Saturday 9th August offers a feast of goodies for collectors’ and features several examples of the ultra rare “Captain Jack White” 60c stamp that An Post pulled on the morning of issue. The stamp was issued to commemorate the centenary of the formation of the Irish Citizen Army and featured a platoon of ICA men with the head of Captain White superimposed on main picture.
It was believed that the man in the photo was Captain Jack White, a former British Army Officer who, in 1913, volunteered to train the Irish Citizen Army. This photograph had been published, without challenge, in academic books and periodicals over many years, including the highly regarded publications History Ireland and The Irish Civil War. However, just ahead of the stamp issue date, an historian disputed the veracity of the image saying that the man in the photograph was not Captain Jack White. Given the doubts raised An Post pulled the stamp on the morning of issue – 23rd January 2014 – with only a tiny number being sold across the counter.
One has since sold on eBay on the 17th May for a tidy $1.226.51 – I predict a feeding frenzy.
Lots more here: https://www.glenstephens.com/snjuly14.html
An Post issued a revised 60c stamp on April 17th showing an image of the Irish Citizen Army at Croydon Park, Dublin sans ‘Captain White’ – pictured below.
Catalogues for what promises to be a very exciting auction are available from auctioneers at the address below – price €10 including p+p.

Frock Around The Clock Vintage Fair at the Ulster Folk & Transport Museum – Saturday 14th June, 2014
Get ready for a day of vintage glamour combined with the music of the Swinging Sixties, the thrill of motor racing, some seriously good looking Vespas and Minis, a tea tent, and plenty of fun for all the family!
This Saturday 14th June sees our fabulous Frock Around The Clock Vintage Fair join forces with the wonderful Cultra Hill Climb for the very first time at the spectacular Ulster Folk & Transport Museum!
The event runs from 10am to 5pm so that’s a whole day of fun for everyone, and you will find us located in the Kennedy Room, on the first floor of the Cultra Manor House which will be at the hub of all the activity beside the food marquee and motor displays.
The scene is set to celebrate all ‘Minis, Mods and Monsters’ and vintage lovers everywhere are invited to the daylong event, run in association with the Thoroughbred Sports Car Club NI, to celebrate the Swinging Sixties in roaring style as fashion, lifestyle and music meets motoring and scootering at Cultra’s Manor House, for a Mod-tastic day out for the whole family! For all the guys who complain that the vintage fairs are geared more towards the ladies, make sure that you don’t miss this Saturday (it has been described by Sugahfix.com as the ultimate man creche!)
The theme of the world’s oldest active Hillclimb is in celebration of Paddy Hopkirk’s win on the Monte Carlo rally 50 years ago as Northern Ireland commemorates an important year for the Mini, and the event will also recognise the coolness of Vespa-riding mods and modified cars, alongside monster cars and trucks.
The Frock Around The Clock Vintage Fair will be located in the upstairs of the beautiful Cultra Manor House and will feature 20 fantastic stalls showcasing and selling authentic vintage, handmade and upcycled clothing, fashion accessories, homewares, jewellery, art, crafts & gifts, collectibles and much more! DJ Johnny Dregg from Sunglasses After Dark (Belfast’s hottest 50s & 60s rock and roll club) will be providing some knockout vintage sounds from the ’60s throughout the day, so you can twist along while shopping for vintage treasures!
The event has something for everyone – visitors to the Vintage Fair can also appreciate the sights and sounds of the Hillclimb while browsing and shopping for vintage delights as the windows of the Manor House will overlook the races and the lawn where food from the BBQ or an ice cream from the vintage tricycle can be enjoyed. Crosslé Car Company of Holywood will also have a display on the ground floor of Cultra Manor, where Plum Tyndall will launch his book ‘Hidden Glory’, based on the world-famous car company, in the most fitting of settings.
The Cultra Hillclimb takes place at the Manor House on the grounds of the Ulster Folk & Transport Museum on Saturday 14 June, from 10am to 5pm. Event day admission pricing applies (more information can be found at https://nmni.com/Home/Ticket-Booking.aspx?EventId=905
and the admission price includes access to the motor races, the Frock Around The Clock Vintage Fair and the whole of the Folk & Transport Museum galleries and rural exhibits!

Quality Irish Art at Ross’s (Belfast) Auction on Wednesday 26th March, 2014
QUARTERLY SALE OF IRISH PAINTINGS
Quality and value abound amongst the 231 Lots on offer in Ross’s Quarterly Irish Art Sale on Wednesday 26th March next.
All the usual suspects are here including the overrated Markey Robinson, the awful Graham Knuttel, the talented but repetitive Gregory Moore, Samuel McLarnon, Ken Hamilton and Dennis Orme Shaw but, for me, it’s the works by Maurice Canning Wilks and William Percy French that stand-out from the rest. Both artists are still just about within the budget of the ordinary art collector!
If there’s one criticism that I have of many of William Percy French’s paintings, it is that they are too damn small – I like a bigger bang for my buck and that is where the likes of Maurice Canning Wilks, Dennis Orme Shaw etc. win out. Big walls need big paintings but it’s hard not to be seduced by the beauty and simplicity of French’s watercolours. There are two included in this sale with low four figure estimates.
Viewing:
Monday 24th March from 10:00am – 8:00pm
Tuesday 25th March from 10:00am – 8:00am
