As usual it was the paintings that caution my attention and in particular this evocative work by Percy French painted in 1909.
Previously unseen Jack B Yeats painting sells for £349,250.00 at Christie’s, London

A horseman enters a town at night by Jack B Yeats - Est.£300,000 - £500,000
‘A Horseman Enters a Town at Night‘ pictured above was painted by Jack B Yeats, at the age of 77, in 1948 and has never been seen in public. The oil on canvas measures 24in x 36in and had a pre-sale estimate of £300,000-£500,000. It was eventually knocked down for £349,250 (including the buyer’s premium) at Christie’s sale of 20th Century British & Irish Art today. Yeats, who died in 1957, is one of the most-collected – and expensive – of Irish artists. The highest price paid for one of his paintings was achieved in 1999 when Sotheby’s in London sold ‘The Wild Ones‘ for just over £1.2 million. To my untutored eye he is also one of the most overrated artists and I wouldn’t give this primitive daub wall space. Talking of daubs the 1987 pastel work below by Sean Scully – untitled – fetched an incredible £32,450 (including buyer’s premium)!

An untitled work by Sean Scully - Est.£25,000 - £35,000
Adam’s Bank of Ireland Art Sale – 24th November at 6pm – Reminder

Clouds at Sunset by Paul Henry - Est.€30-50,000

Sand and Light by Tony O'Malley - Est.€40-60,000
There are many gems and some utter dross in this sale and I leave you to make up your own minds which of the above falls into which category. A few lots have been pulled by the Bank of Ireland after political interference but this has little effect on the quality of the sale.

Results from Gormleys Dublin Art Auction show effects of recession?
Gormleys Sale at the D4 Berkeley Court Hotel on October 26th saw almost 40% of the lots go unsold and most of those that did sell went for amounts below their pre-auction estimates. In my opinion this reflects more the state of the country than the quality of art included in the sale. As it was, it was the big names (and prices) such as Percy French, Louis le Brocquy and Maurice Wilks that failed to sell with lesser known artists such as Thelma Mansfield and J P Rooney doing quite well. The highest price of the evening was €5,300 for “Time to Reflect” by Northern Ireland artist Ken Hamilton and even this was well below the pre-sale estimate of €8,000 -9,000. Perhaps the art buying public are holding themselves back for the Adam’s “Bank of Ireland” sale in November?

"Time to Reflect" by Ken Hamilton - sold €5,300. (Pre-sale estimate €8,000-9,000.)
The unsold lots may still be purchased and can be viewed here: http://www.gormleysartauctions.com/auction.asp?AuctionID=45&Sold=&offset=0
James Adam’s Sale of Irish Art on October 13th – Results
Unsurprisingly the Paul Henry oil painting “The Bog Road” was the star of the show at the Adam’s Sale of Irish Art in their Stephen’s Green Salerooms on October 13th. The wonderful painting exceeded its estimate of €40-60,000 and was eventually knocked down for €72,000. I was also pleased to note that the three watercolours by Frank Egginton that I mentioned in my pre-sale piece were also sold above their estimate – so, it appears that I am not the last bastion of good taste!

Frank Egginton RCA (1908-1990) Bridge Over A River - Sold for €4,000

Anybody whose anybody of the Irish Art World features in this sale – Paul Henry, Tony O’Malley, Robert Ballagh, Markey Robinson, Nathaniel Hone, Norah McGuinness, Maurice Wilks, Sean Keating, Patrick Collins, Nano Reid, Douglas Alexander, Mainie Jellet, Camille Souter, Michael Warren, Maurice MacGonigal, Louis le Brocquy, Cecil King . An outstanding work, to me anyway, is “Fire at the Royal Arcade, College Green, Dublin” (1837) by William Sadler II (c.1782 – 1839). Once again, in the bargain end of the sale are some superb Irish watercolours by Frank Egginton RCA (1908-1990) estimated at a paltry €1,000/1,500!
The catalogue itself is a collector’s item and is packed with information about the paintings, artists and provenances of the various works.
