Some people use tables and others just use a sheet to lay on the grass. The queue of traders can normally start anywhere from 7:00am but any time up to 8:30am should be fine. (Near “The Trading Post” shop/filling station on the (R741) – the road between Gorey and Wexford via Ballycanew)

Subject to weather!
From: 6.00am – 2.00pm
The Unyoke Market & Car Boot is worth a visit providing it’s dry! It gets very messy and dirty if there’s any rain and as most of the stuff is on the ground as opposed to tables, this is a big disadvantage. Like any market the earlier the better. One of the traders told me that she’s there at 6.30am and dealers would be going through her stuff with a torch. I can be there at any time after 9.00am and it seems to be at its busiest from 9.00am to 11.30am. If you arrive after 11.30am some traders are already packing up.

Car Boot Sale
Knockananna Village Hall,
Knockananna,
Co.Wicklow
Y14 TF10

1.) Most car boots start early for sellers [6:30am – 7:30am]. However, for some (Dundrum/Wesley in Dublin) you would need to be there before 6:00am.
2.) When you arrive, and start to set-up, you will be beset by a number of buyers, including other Car-Booters, who will hassle you into selling your best items at knock-down prices. Hence, you need to know what to ask for your items, AND what you are prepared to sell them for. Remember, it is a market, and haggling is all part of the fun (?) (We have seen some items we let go early appear on other Car-Booters’ stalls later, and, of course, at a higher price!)
3.) While it is not necessary to have a table to sell, it does seem to be the norm now. Try to have a helper with you, at least for your first sale. You will see many people selling on their own at Car-Boots. But it is my observation that usually they are very experienced and well able to hold their own in any negotiation/situation.
4.) Don’t put all your best stuff out at once. Have a “Draw” item that gets people to come to have a serious look at it. They may not buy it, but they will take a closer look at the rest of your stall. When it’s sold, put out another “Goodie”. You will sell more if people congregate around your stall, but don’t get into a long conversation with one customer.
5.) Make sure to chat to the sellers beside you when you arrive. While they will be busy with their own stuff, they will usually keep an eye on how you are doing and help out if required.
6.) Bring enough of a cash float with you, in small notes and €2s/€1s and 50cents. We don’t price anything below 50cents. It saves a whole amount of bother giving change. Remember, you will most likely have to pay for your stall (€10/€20) before you make your first sale.
7.) Be careful of someone offering a large note €50/€20 for a small purchase. Check notes with your finger-nail; there is a small rough area on every (genuine) note, which you should feel before you hand over change. Use a cash-bag on a belt around you (not sure of the correct term). Hide large notes you take in away safely and quickly.
8.) Dress warmly; bring a flask and some Sambos. It’s very easy to spend a lot of your hard-earned take on food at the Car-Boot. Resist buying from other stalls unless you spot a REAL bargain. Remember, you are there to de-clutter your own house; not to keep it in the same state.
9.) Bring a sheet of plastic to throw over your stall when (not if) it showers. If it starts to really rain, pack up early so that your stock does not get too wet.
10.) A lot of Car-Booters sit on the edge of the opened boot of their car. It’s a sore place to sit without a cushion, or you could bring a folding chair with you.
11.) Check with the organisers (or here) about on-site toilets. We went back to one Car-Boot and found that the toilets were locked due to refurbishments, and NO alternative provision had been made. Big ‘Black Mark’ there.
