SALE OF IMPORTANT IRISH ART

At: The Salerooms, 26 St.Stephen’s Green

On: Weds.1st June, 2011 at 6:00pm

155 lots – Some of the familiar ‘big’ names are here, including Maurice Wilks, Frank McKelvey,  Jack B Yeats, Frank Egginton, Paul Henry,  Sir William Orpen, Erskine Nicol, Walter Frederick Osborne, Sir John Lavery, Louis le Brocquy, Tony O’Malley, Colin Middleton, Harry Kernoff as well as a host of lesser known artists.

The two Jack B Yeats works/daubs both carry high estimates though it’s hard to see why you would want either hanging on your wall. Lot.54. “The Waterfall by the Road” (below) is thought to depict the beautiful Glenmacnass Waterfall in County Wicklow but it would encourage few to visit the location. The ubiquitous Louis le Brocquy features too, as does the undecipherable Tony O’Malley but, as usual for me, it is the Paul Henry, Lot.16. (pictured bottom) which is head and shoulders above the rest. Priced to sell – a snip at the pre-sale estimate of €60,000 – €80,000.

"The Waterfall by the Road" Jack B Yeats. Est.€30,000 - €40,000

"Connemara Landscape" Paul Henry. Est.€60,000 - €80,000

Reflections, Connemara by Douglas Alexander - Est.€400-600

One of my favourite landscape artists, Douglas Alexander, is represented by a number of his wonderful Connemara watercolours, several with very reasonable estimates in the €400-600 range. A brief and poignant note on the artist from Dolan’s catalogue below.

‘Douglas Alexander was born in Limerick, the son of a Quaker family who owned a grocery and ship’s chandlery business at the corner of William Street and O’Connell Street. The Goodwin Galleries Limerick and The Victor Waddington Galleries Dublin both exhibited his work on a regular basis. He also exhibited in the RHA and the Dublin Sketching Club in the 1930’s. Although for several generations members of the Alexander family were prominent in Limerick in both business and Philanthropic pursuits, Douglas, ended his days in poverty.’
